Merrell MTL SpeedARC Peak Review: Can Carbon Plates Survive the Trails?

RunToTheFinish is billing the shoe as a carbon-plate runner built for dirt, while Retail Times frames the debut as "a new benchmark in trail running performance." That's Merrell's pitch, parroted by outlets running launch-week coverage. Whether it earns that label is a different conversation.
What the coverage actually tells us
Not much beyond the name and the concept. RunToTheFinish positions the SpeedARC Peak as a carbon-plated trail shoe designed for off-road use — that's the one concrete design cue worth pulling from the early reviews. No verified stack height, no weight, no drop, no lug depth, no price on record yet. Every outlet running a "review" this week is working off the same launch information the rest of us are.
I'm not faulting the timing. Trail shoe launches move fast, and reviewers have to publish or get buried. But you don't buy a carbon-plated trail shoe because outlets said "benchmark" in the same week. You wait for verified numbers — and more importantly, long-term wear reports from people actually grinding out vertical in them.
Carbon on dirt isn't carbon on tarmac
Here's where I get picky. Carbon plates earned their reputation on roads — repetitive cadence, predictable surface, energy return compounding over clean miles. Trail running isn't that. Every footfall is a negotiation with rock, root, and loose scree. A plate that drives you forward on tarmac can torque your ankle laterally the instant the ground shifts under you.
That doesn't mean the SpeedARC Peak is doomed. It means the design intent matters more than the plate itself. How is it anchored? What's the rock plate doing underneath? How does the upper handle load when you're hauling down a steep grade with a pack on? None of that's in the early coverage. It won't be until someone logs real vertical in them and reports what broke first.
Three checkpoints before you buy
Verified specs first. Weight, stack, drop, lug geometry. If Merrell won't publish them, that's your first red flag. Second — independent durability data. Carbon plates fatigue. On rough terrain, they fatigue faster. Third — fit under load. A trail shoe lives or dies on how it handles a descent when your foot is sliding forward and the midsole is the only thing between your toes and a bruised nail bed.
For now, the SpeedARC Peak is a launch with a name and a promise. Promises don't earn mileage. The shoe does.
