The Czech Trail Runner Who Tracks Missing Hikers in Taiwan's Rugged Peaks

Four thousand people vanished in Taiwan's mountains in the last five years. Nearly three hundred never came back. Most of those cases end with a body recovery, not a rescue, and a Czech trail runner named Petr Novotny has built his life around that brutal math. As Explorersweb reports, his decade of work in the island's rugged peaks is now drawing global attention.

The Accidental Search-and-Rescue Athlete

Novotny did not set out to find the dead. He arrived in Taiwan as an exchange student, fell for the mountains, and roughly a decade ago joined one search just to help. He discovered he had the eyes and the lungs for it. Hiking is wildly popular on the island, and the steady stream of missing persons turned his side effort into a calling. Families now hire him knowing the outcome they will get is a body, not a survivor. In 2022, he located a missing technology executive whose family had posted a hefty reward, and the media wave that followed brought hundreds of thousands of followers to his YouTube channel, Beast Runners.

What the Workload Reveals About Mountain Fitness

Four thousand missing in five years is not a freak statistic. It is a workload. Search and rescue in steep, humid, unpredictable terrain is the most demanding form of trail running you can sign up for. You are not jogging. You are torqueing up scree at altitude, holding a controlled descent on blown-out quads, and grinding vertical for hours while scanning the ground for clues. Load distribution through the hips and ankles, sustained cadence under fatigue, and the mental discipline to keep moving when the search turns from rescue to recovery — that is the skill stack. It is not built in a gym. It is built on long days, heavy packs, and weather you do not get to pick.

What to Steal for Your Own Training

You will probably never run SAR. Fine. But the engine Novotny runs is the same one a serious trail athlete builds, and the failure points are the same ones that end careers early. Build your base around vertical, not mileage. Practice hiking with weight before you race with it. Lock down your braking mechanics on steep descents until locked-leg stumbling is impossible. Train your mind to keep working when the outing stops being fun, because on a real mountain the day does not care about your mood.

Above all: tell someone where you are going. The 300 who did not come home did not vanish on purpose. They vanished because nobody knew where to look first.
