The North Face OffTrail Ultra: A Technical Shoe Built for Rugged Terrain

The midsole does the heavy lifting
Most trail shoes stack two foams and glue them together. TNF's new Dreambound midsole uses nitrogen-infused superfoam molded in a single operation — no adhesives bonding the dual densities. That matters on long mountain days. Fewer bonded layers mean less delamination risk and more consistent rebound under repeated load. For runners grinding out vertical, that's the difference between a midsole that keeps its snap at mile 25 and one that goes flat by the halfway mark.
The outsole gets the upgrade too: Surface CTRL G2 with 5mm lugs and a dedicated scrambling zone at the toe, shaped from athlete feedback. Five millimeters isn't aggressive by ultra standards, but the toe zone addresses the steep, loose ground where most shoes slip out from under you. If your cadence collapses on descents, no lug pattern will save you.
Lockdown without bulk
The ScreeGuard stretch gaiter keeps debris out without the bootie feel. The forefoot uses a seamless dual-wrap upper; the rear quarter adds hydrophobic ripstop. Inside, a bonded internal frame pairs with TPU overlays for lockdown and abrasion resistance. Nothing revolutionary — just clean execution aimed at keeping your foot planted when the trail turns to rubble.
Two colorways launch: White Ash/TNF Black and Papaya/Canal Blue. The high-vis palette nods to the 1990 Trans-Antarctica Expedition. Available now on TNF's site and at select specialty retailers.
Where the trail market is heading
This isn't the only release worth tracking. Salomon just refreshed the S/Lab Genesis for the first time in four years, and RacePace announced a partnership with ITRA for race-day trail and ultra data. The category is consolidating around serious athletes — not casual hikers chasing a "trail" look.
Your training should match. The OffTrail Ultra is built for runners who already log vertical with intent and need a shoe that won't fall apart under the load. If you're not there yet, use the launch as a checkpoint. Build the downhill mechanics, the ankle stability, the hip drive. When the shoe arrives at your feet, your body should already be ready for it.
