But the existence of a calendar is still worth your attention if you train seriously. Shoe releases tend to create two useful pressure points: new models appear, and older versions start sliding into sale racks. That is where disciplined runners win. Not by chasing every midsole compound with a shiny name. By knowing when to test, when to stock up, and when to walk away.
If you’re building a trail or road block for 2026, use release timing like you use a training plan. Don’t switch shoes right before a race. Don’t test a new platform on your longest run. Don’t let a discount talk you into wrecking your kinetic chain with a shoe that fights your stride.
A calendar helps you avoid panic buying. That alone is worth something.
The current deal signals: Brooks and Hoka are already moving

That last bit is the part I care about. Fit beats foam. Every time.
A shoe can be light, responsive, grippy, and discounted. If your toes are jammed on descents or your midfoot is swimming on cambered trail, it is the wrong shoe. Period. For trail runners using road shoes for gym work, pavement mileage, or travel days, a Launch-type trainer can make sense. But do not confuse “comfortable in the store” with “stable after fatigue sets in.”
Yahoo also reports that REI is selling Hoka Clifton running shoes for $30 off in 15 colors, plus additional deals. The available source text does not give more detail, so keep it simple: another major trainer is being discounted, and that reinforces the point. Retail timing is shifting before many runners have even mapped their 2026 shoe rotation.
What I’d do before buying
Start with your actual training load. Not your fantasy load. Not the one you post about. The one your legs are absorbing.
If your current shoes are packed out, unevenly worn, or forcing you to alter cadence, put replacement ahead of novelty. Dead foam makes you work harder through the calves, knees, and hips. Bad load distribution does not care that you saved thirty bucks.
If you are eyeing a 2026 release, wait until there is enough real-world feedback to know whether the update changed fit, ride, or outsole behavior. Early-release excitement is cheap. A hot spot at mile twelve is expensive.
If you are buying discounted 2025 or current-stock shoes, be ruthless:
- Same model you already trust? Good. Stocking up can make sense.
- New-to-you model? Test it on short runs first.
- Slightly small fit reported? Do not “break it in” with wishful thinking.
- Road shoe for trail work? Keep it to mellow dirt, gravel, gym, or pavement unless the outsole and upper can handle torque.
